Social Work
Social workers seek to improve the quality of life and well-being of individuals,
groups and communities. Cuyamaca College’s Social Work Program will help students
apply critical thinking to the research, effects and planning in the field and practice
of social work; analyze various situations and determine the proper role of a social
worker and the various factors influencing a situation; and investigate social worker
duties in dealing with a wide variety of difficult social situations, including discrimination,
oppression, maltreatment, poverty and injustice.
Lower level courses include Social Work Fields of Service, which introduces students to the profession of social work and fields of practice, and Introduction to Social Work, which provides a framework for analyzing policy issues and for making informed decisions on social issues. The latter course requires students to volunteer at a social service/community service agency to observe and report on how social workers attempt to assess and address social problems. Selected Topics in Social Works lets students tackle subjects not covered by regular catalog offerings.
Students who earns an Associate Degree in Social Work will be well on their way toward making a difference in people’s lives and in the world around us.
